Aims and Activities

Our aim is to investigate the molecular, cellular and physiological basis of heart disease and to evaluate new and innovative approaches to its treatment. Our research is founded on the belief that advances in clinical practice depend on understanding the fundamental biology of the heart.

Our research activities are centred on three principal themes. Heart Failure, examining the causes and treatment of heart failure, Valve Research and Tissue Engineering, examining both the clinical use and biology of heart valves including approaches to tissue engineering a viable valve, and Transplantation, focussing on the immunological pathways that contribute to acute and chronic rejection.

We are dedicated to the advancement of knowledge through education. We have a strong record in MD and PhD training and actively participate in undergraduate teaching.

In addition to academic research, the Harefield Heart Science Centre houses facilities supporting clinical activities of the Harefield Hospital Transplant Unit. These include the Tissue Typing Service, the Immunosuppressive Drug Monitoring Service and the UK National Sirolimus Monitoring Service.
